Vada Pav
Vada Pav is a popular vegetarian fast food dish native to the Indian state of Maharashtra. It consists of a spicy potato fritter (vada) sandwiched between a bread bun (pav).
Ingredients - Serves 4
- Tamarind chutney - As required
- Green chutney - As required
- Bread buns (pav) - 4
- Oil - For deep frying
- Salt - To taste
- Water - As required
- Gram flour (besan) - 1 cup
- Curry leaves - 8-10
- Mustard seeds - 1 teaspoon
- Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
- Ginger - 1 inch piece, finely chopped
- Garlic - 6 cloves, finely chopped
- Green chilies - 2, finely chopped
- Potatoes - 4 medium, boiled and mashed
Let's Get Started
- Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a pan, add mustard seeds and curry leaves. Once they splutter, add chopped ginger, garlic and green chilies. Saute for a minute.
- Add turmeric powder and salt to the pan and mix well. Add the mashed potatoes and mix until all the ingredients are well combined. Remove from heat and let it cool.
- Once the potato mixture is cool, make small balls out of it and set aside.
- In a bowl, mix gram flour, a pinch of salt, and water to make a thick batter.
- Heat oil in a deep frying pan. Dip each potato ball in the batter and deep fry until golden brown. Drain on paper towels.
- Slice each bread bun in half, spread some green chutney and tamarind chutney on the inside of the bun. Place a potato fritter (vada) inside the bun.
- Serve the Vada Pav hot with some fried green chilies and chutney on the side.
