Vaca Frita
Vaca Frita is a traditional Cuban dish made with shredded and fried beef, seasoned with garlic and citrus flavors.
Ingredients - Serves 4
- Lime wedges - For serving
- Cilantro - 1/4 cup, chopped
- Green bell pepper - 1, thinly sliced
- Onion - 1 large, thinly sliced
- Olive oil - 2 tablespoons
- Black pepper - 1/2 teaspoon
- Salt - 1 teaspoon
- Orange juice - 1/4 cup
- Lime juice - 1/4 cup
- Garlic - 4 cloves, minced
- Flank steak - 1.5 pounds
Let's Get Started
- In a large pot, bring water to a boil. Add the flank steak and cook for 1 hour or until tender.
- Remove the cooked flank steak from the pot and let it cool. Once cooled, shred the beef into thin strips.
- In a bowl, combine the minced garlic, lime juice, orange juice, salt, and black pepper. Mix well.
- Marinate the shredded beef in the garlic and citrus mixture for at least 30 minutes.
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the sliced onion and green bell pepper. Cook until softened and slightly caramelized.
- Add the marinated shredded beef to the skillet and cook until crispy and browned, about 5-7 minutes.
- Sprinkle chopped cilantro over the cooked beef and stir to combine.
- Serve the Vaca Frita hot with lime wedges on the side.
