Tourtière
Tourtière is a classic French-Canadian dish that is enjoyed throughout Canada, especially during the Christmas holiday season. This hearty meat pie is filled with ground pork, beef, and a wonderful blend of spices.
Ingredients - Serves 8
- Egg - 1, beaten
- Pie crust - 2, ready-made
- Breadcrumbs - 1/2 cup
- Water - 1/2 cup
- Ground cinnamon - 1/4 teaspoon
- Ground nutmeg - 1/4 teaspoon
- Ground cloves - 1/4 teaspoon
- Pepper - 1/2 teaspoon
- Salt - 1 teaspoon
- Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
- Onion - 1, finely chopped
- Ground beef - 1/2 pound
- Ground pork - 1 pound
Let's Get Started
- In a large skillet, cook the pork and beef over medium heat until no longer pink. Drain off any fat.
- Add the onion, garlic, salt, pepper, cloves, nutmeg, and cinnamon to the skillet. Cook for 5 minutes, or until the onion is soft.
- Add the water and breadcrumbs to the skillet. Stir well and simmer for 5 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F.
- Line a 9-inch pie plate with one of the pie crusts. Spoon the meat mixture into the crust.
- Cover with the second pie crust and crimp the edges to seal. Cut a few slits in the top crust to allow steam to escape.
- Brush the top crust with the beaten egg.
- Bake for 45 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown. Let the pie cool for a few minutes before serving.
