  1. In a large bowl, mix the masa harina with the chicken broth until a dough forms.
  2. In a large pot, melt the lard over medium heat. Add the masa dough and salt, and cook, stirring constantly, until the dough is thick and smooth.
  3. Spread half of the masa dough in the bottom of a large, greased baking dish.
  4. In the same pot, cook the pork shoulder until browned on all sides. Remove the pork and set aside.
  5. In the same pot, cook the onion, garlic, tomatoes, chilies, cumin, and oregano until the vegetables are soft and the spices are fragrant.
  6. Return the pork to the pot and stir to combine with the vegetables and spices.
  7. Spread the pork mixture over the masa dough in the baking dish, then top with the remaining masa dough.
  8. Cover the dish with foil and bake at 350°F for 2 hours, or until the tamal is firm and cooked through.
