Sourdough Bread Bowl
A delicious and hearty sourdough bread bowl perfect for serving your favorite soup or chili.
Ingredients - Serves 4
- Cornmeal - For dusting
- All-purpose flour - 3 1/2 to 4 cups
- Salt - 2 teaspoons
- Sugar - 1 tablespoon
- Warm water - 1 1/2 cups
- Active dry yeast - 2 1/4 teaspoons
Let's Get Started
- In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Add the sugar and let stand for 5 minutes.
- Add salt and enough flour to form a soft dough.
- Turn onto a floured surface; knead until smooth and elastic, about 6-8 minutes. Place in a greased bowl, turning once to grease top. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 hour.
- Punch dough down; return to bowl. Cover and let rise for 30 minutes.

- Bake at 500° for 15 minutes. Reduce heat to 375°; bake 20 minutes longer or until golden brown. Cut a thin slice off the top of bread. Hollow out bottom half, leaving a 1/4-in. shell (discard removed bread or save for another use). Fill with hot soup.
