Red Cooked Pork
Red Cooked Pork is a classic Chinese dish, also known as Hong Shao Rou. It's a dish of braised pork belly, slow cooked in a flavorful sauce.
Ingredients - Serves 4
- Water - Enough to cover the pork
- Green onions - 2, cut into 2 inch pieces
- Garlic - 3 cloves, smashed
- Ginger - 1 inch piece, sliced
- Star anise - 2
- Sugar - 1/4 cup
- Shaoxing wine - 1/2 cup
- Soy sauce - 1/2 cup
- Pork belly - 1 pound
Let's Get Started
- Cut the pork belly into 1 inch cubes.
- Heat a pot over medium heat, add the sugar and cook until it melts and turns into a caramel color.
- Add the pork belly to the pot and cook until it is browned on all sides.
- Add the soy sauce, Shaoxing wine, star anise, ginger, garlic, and green onions to the pot.
- Add enough water to the pot to just cover the pork.
- Bring the pot to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and cover the pot.
- Simmer for 2 hours, or until the pork is tender and the sauce has thickened.
- Serve the red cooked pork with rice.
