Diamond Heights Daal
A flavorful and comforting Indian lentil dish, perfect for a hearty dinner.
Ingredients - Serves 4
- Fresh cilantro - For garnish
- Garam masala - 1 teaspoon
- Tomatoes - 2, chopped
- Ginger - 1 inch piece, grated
- Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
- Onion - 1, finely chopped
- Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon
- Ghee or vegetable oil - 2 tablespoons
- Salt - 1 teaspoon
- Turmeric - 1/2 teaspoon
- Water - 4 cups
- Red lentils - 1 cup
Let's Get Started
- Rinse the lentils until the water runs clear. Add them to a pot with the water, turmeric, and salt. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer until the lentils are soft, about 20 minutes.
- In a separate pan, heat the ghee or oil over medium heat. Add the cumin seeds and cook until they start to pop.
- Add the onion, garlic, and ginger to the pan and cook until the onion is soft and golden.
- Add the tomatoes and garam masala to the pan and cook until the tomatoes are soft and the spices are well blended.
- Add the onion and tomato mixture to the lentils and stir well. Simmer for another 10 minutes to let the flavors meld together.
- Serve the daal hot, garnished with fresh cilantro.
