Poutine with Braised Beef
A hearty Canadian dish made with crispy fries, cheese curds, and topped with tender braised beef and rich gravy.
Ingredients - Serves 4
- Gravy - 2 cups
- Cheese curds - 2 cups
- Vegetable oil - For frying
- Potatoes - 4 large, cut into fries
- Worcestershire sauce - 1 tablespoon
- Beef broth - 2 cups
- Garlic - 4 cloves, minced
- Onion - 1, chopped
- Olive oil - 2 tablespoons
- Salt and pepper - To taste
- Beef chuck roast - 2 pounds
Let's Get Started
- Season the beef with salt and pepper. Heat the olive oil in a large pot over medium-high heat. Add the beef and cook until browned on all sides.
- Add the onion and garlic to the pot and cook until softened. Add the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, then bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let it simmer for 3-4 hours, or until the beef is tender.
- While the beef is cooking, prepare the fries. Heat the vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 375°F. Add the potatoes and cook until golden and crispy. Drain on paper towels and season with salt.
- When the beef is ready, shred it with two forks. Keep the cooking liquid to use as gravy.
- To assemble the poutine, place a layer of fries in a dish. Top with a layer of cheese curds, then a layer of shredded beef. Pour the gravy over the top. Repeat the layers until all ingredients are used.
- Serve the poutine hot, with extra gravy on the side.
