Pickled Fish
A traditional South African dish, pickled fish is a sweet and sour delight. This recipe uses white fish, like hake or cod, and a medley of spices to create a dish that's perfect for any occasion.
Ingredients - Serves 6
- Salt and pepper - To taste
- Bay leaves - 2
- Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
- Onions - 2, sliced
- Curry powder - 2 tablespoons
- Turmeric - 1 tablespoon
- Sugar - 1 cup
- Water - 1 cup
- White vinegar - 2 cups
- White fish fillets - 1 kg
Let's Get Started
- Season the fish fillets with salt and pepper.
- In a large pot, combine the vinegar, water, sugar, turmeric, curry powder, onions, garlic, and bay leaves. Bring to a boil.
- Add the fish to the pot and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the fish is cooked through.
- Remove the fish from the pot and set aside. Continue to simmer the sauce until it has reduced by half.
- Place the fish in a deep dish and pour the reduced sauce over the top. Let it cool to room temperature.
- Cover the dish and refrigerate for at least 24 hours before serving to allow the flavors to meld together.
