Pepper Buns
Pepper Buns are a popular street food in Taiwan, featuring a crispy and slightly sweet bun filled with juicy, peppery pork.
Ingredients - Serves 8
- Sesame oil - 1 tablespoon
- Green onions - 1/2 cup, chopped
- Ground pork - 1 pound
- Ground black pepper - 1 tablespoon
- Ground white pepper - 1 tablespoon
- Salt - 1/2 teaspoon
- All-purpose flour - 3 cups
- White sugar - 1/4 cup
- Warm water - 1 cup
- Active dry yeast - 1 tablespoon
Let's Get Started
- In a small bowl, dissolve yeast and sugar in warm water. Let stand until creamy, about 10 minutes.
- In a large bowl, combine the yeast mixture with flour and salt; stir well to combine. Knead until a smooth, elastic dough has formed.
- Lightly oil a large bowl, place the dough in the bowl, and turn to coat with oil. Cover with a damp cloth and let rise in a warm place until doubled in volume, about 1 hour.
- While dough is rising, mix together ground pork, green onions, white pepper, black pepper, and sesame oil in a bowl. Set aside.
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
- Deflate the dough and turn it out onto a lightly floured surface. Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces and form into rounds. Roll each round out into a thin circle, then place a portion of the pork mixture into the center of each round. Wrap the dough around the filling and pinch to seal.
- Place the buns on a baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes, or until golden brown.
