Chinatown Dim Sum Bao
These fluffy, steamed buns filled with a savory mixture are a staple in Chinese cuisine, particularly in dim sum.
Ingredients - Serves 10
- Ginger - 1 tablespoon, minced
- Green onions - 2, chopped
- Sesame oil - 1 tablespoon
- Soy sauce - 2 tablespoons
- Ground pork - 1 cup
- Baking powder - 1/4 teaspoon
- All-purpose flour - 4 cups
- Sugar - 1/4 cup
- Warm water - 1 cup
- Active dry yeast - 1 tablespoon
Let's Get Started
- In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast and sugar in the warm water. Let sit for 10 minutes until frothy.
- In a large bowl, combine the flour and baking powder. Make a well in the center and pour in the yeast mixture. Stir until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes, until smooth and elastic. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 hour.
- While the dough is rising, make the filling. In a bowl, combine the ground pork, soy sauce, sesame oil, green onions, and ginger. Mix well.
- After the dough has risen, punch it down and divide into 10 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball and flatten with a rolling pin.
- Place a spoonful of the filling in the center of each dough circle. Gather the edges to seal the bun.
- Place the buns on a piece of parchment paper in a steamer. Cover and let rise for 30 minutes.
- Steam the buns over high heat for 15 minutes, until puffed and cooked through.
