Masoor Dal Tadka
Masoor Dal Tadka is a flavorful and comforting Indian lentil dish made with red lentils, tempered with aromatic spices.
Ingredients - Serves 4
- Lemon juice - 1 tablespoon
- Fresh coriander leaves - 2 tablespoons, chopped
- Salt - To taste
- Garam masala - 1/2 teaspoon
- Coriander powder - 1 teaspoon
- Red chili powder - 1/2 teaspoon
- Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
- Ginger-garlic paste - 1 tablespoon
- Green chili - 1, slit
- Tomato - 1, finely chopped
- Onion - 1, finely chopped
- Asafoetida (hing) - 1/4 teaspoon
- Mustard seeds - 1 teaspoon
- Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon
- Ghee or oil - 2 tablespoons
- Water - 3 cups
- Red lentils (masoor dal) - 1 cup
Let's Get Started
- Rinse the red lentils (masoor dal) under running water until water runs clear.
- In a pressure cooker, add the rinsed lentils and 3 cups of water. Pressure cook for 3-4 whistles or until the lentils are soft and mushy.
- Heat ghee or oil in a pan over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and mustard seeds. Let them splutter.
- Add asafoetida (hing) and sauté for a few seconds.
- Add finely chopped onion and sauté until it turns golden brown.
- Add ginger-garlic paste and sauté for a minute until the raw smell goes away.
- Add finely chopped tomato and green chili. Cook until the tomatoes are soft and mushy.
- Add turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, and garam masala. Mix well and cook for a minute.
- Add the cooked lentils (masoor dal) along with salt. Mix well and simmer for 5-10 minutes to allow the flavors to blend together.
- Garnish with freshly chopped coriander leaves and drizzle with lemon juice.
- Serve hot with steamed rice or roti.
