Let's Get Started

  1. Rinse the red lentils (masoor dal) under running water until water runs clear.
  2. In a pressure cooker, add the rinsed lentils and 3 cups of water. Pressure cook for 3-4 whistles or until the lentils are soft and mushy.
  3. Heat ghee or oil in a pan over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and mustard seeds. Let them splutter.
  4. Add asafoetida (hing) and sauté for a few seconds.
  5. Add finely chopped onion and sauté until it turns golden brown.
  6. Add ginger-garlic paste and sauté for a minute until the raw smell goes away.
  7. Add finely chopped tomato and green chili. Cook until the tomatoes are soft and mushy.
  8. Add turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, and garam masala. Mix well and cook for a minute.
  9. Add the cooked lentils (masoor dal) along with salt. Mix well and simmer for 5-10 minutes to allow the flavors to blend together.
  10. Garnish with freshly chopped coriander leaves and drizzle with lemon juice.
  11. Serve hot with steamed rice or roti.
