  1. Rinse the lentils until the water runs clear. Add them to a pot with the water, turmeric, and salt. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer until the lentils are soft, about 20 minutes.
  2. While the lentils are cooking, heat the oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the cumin seeds and cook until they start to pop.
  3. Add the garlic and onion to the pan and cook until the onion is soft and golden.
  4. Add the tomato, red chili powder, coriander powder, and garam masala to the pan. Cook until the tomato is soft and the spices are well blended.
