Loukoumades
Loukoumades are a popular Greek dessert of deep fried dough balls soaked in honey syrup, often sprinkled with cinnamon and sometimes topped with crushed walnuts.
Ingredients - Serves 6
- Crushed walnuts - Optional for topping
- Cinnamon - 1 teaspoon
- Honey - 1 cup
- Olive oil - For frying
- Warm milk - 1/2 cup
- Salt - 1/2 teaspoon
- All-purpose flour - 2 cups
- Sugar - 1 tablespoon
- Warm water - 1 cup
- Active dry yeast - 1 packet
Let's Get Started
- In a large bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm water. Add sugar and stir until dissolved. Let sit for 10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
- Add the flour, salt, and warm milk to the yeast mixture. Mix until a sticky dough forms.
- Cover the bowl with a towel and let the dough rise in a warm place for 1 hour.
- Heat the olive oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 375°F (190°C).
- Drop spoonfuls of the dough into the hot oil and fry until golden brown.
- Remove the doughnuts with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
- Warm the honey in a small saucepan or in the microwave and drizzle over the doughnuts.
- Sprinkle with cinnamon and crushed walnuts if desired. Serve warm.
