Lor Mee
Lor Mee is a popular Hokkien-style noodle dish in Singapore and Malaysia. It features thick yellow noodles served in a thick, starchy gravy with various toppings.
Ingredients - Serves 4
- Cooking oil - 2 tablespoons
- Salt - To taste
- Cornstarch - 2 tablespoons, dissolved in water
- Vinegar - 2 tablespoons
- Dark soy sauce - 2 tablespoons
- White pepper - 1/2 teaspoon
- Garlic - 3 cloves, minced
- Bean sprouts - 1 cup
- Hard-boiled eggs - 4, halved
- Fish cake - 150g, sliced
- Pork belly - 200g, sliced
- Yellow noodles - 400g
Let's Get Started
- Boil the yellow noodles according to package instructions. Drain and set aside.
- Heat the cooking oil in a large pan or wok over medium heat.
- Add the minced garlic and sauté until fragrant.
- Add the sliced pork belly and cook until browned.
- Add the sliced fish cake and stir-fry for a few minutes.
- Pour in enough water to cover the ingredients and bring to a boil.
- Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 15-20 minutes.
- In a separate pot, prepare the starchy gravy by combining the dark soy sauce, vinegar, white pepper, and salt with water. Bring to a boil.
- Add the dissolved cornstarch mixture to the pot and stir until the gravy thickens.
- To serve, place a portion of the boiled noodles in a bowl.
- Top with the cooked pork belly, fish cake, bean sprouts, and halved hard-boiled eggs.
- Pour the thick starchy gravy over the noodles and toppings.
- Garnish with chopped spring onions and fried shallots, if desired.
- Serve hot and enjoy!
