Kadaifi
Kadaifi is a popular Middle Eastern pastry made with shredded filo dough and typically layered with nuts and sweetened with sugar syrup or honey.
Ingredients - Serves 8
- Cloves - 1/2 teaspoon
- Cinnamon - 1 teaspoon
- Lemon juice - 1 tablespoon
- Water - 1 cup
- Sugar - 1 cup
- Walnuts - 2 cups, finely chopped
- Unsalted butter - 1 cup, melted
- Kadaifi dough - 1 pound
Let's Get Started
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Unroll the kadaifi dough and cut into strips. Toss with the melted butter until well coated.
- Spread half of the dough in the bottom of a baking dish. Press down firmly.
- Combine the chopped walnuts, cinnamon, and cloves. Sprinkle over the dough in the baking dish.
- Cover the nuts with the remaining dough, pressing down firmly.
- Bake for 45 minutes, or until golden brown.
- While the kadaifi is baking, make the syrup. Combine the sugar and water in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Add the lemon juice.
- Pour the hot syrup over the hot kadaifi as soon as it comes out of the oven. Let it sit for at least 4 hours, or overnight, before serving.
