Indonesian Sate Padang
Sate Padang is a popular Indonesian dish originating from Padang, West Sumatra. It consists of skewered and grilled meat served with a rich and flavorful peanut sauce.
Ingredients - Serves 4
- Skewers - 8-10, soaked in water
- Lime juice - 2 tablespoons
- Brown sugar - 2 tablespoons
- Tamarind paste - 1 tablespoon, dissolved in 2 tablespoons of water
- Coconut milk - 1 cup
- Peanuts - 1 cup, roasted and ground
- Vegetable oil - 2 tablespoons
- Salt - 1 teaspoon
- Cumin powder - 1 teaspoon
- Coriander powder - 1 teaspoon
- Turmeric powder - 1 teaspoon
- Ginger - 1 thumb-sized piece, grated
- Garlic - 4 cloves, minced
- Lemongrass - 2 stalks, white part only, finely chopped
- Beef sirloin - 500g, thinly sliced
Let's Get Started
- In a bowl, combine the lemongrass, garlic, ginger, turmeric powder, coriander powder, cumin powder, and salt to make a marinade.
- Add the sliced beef to the marinade and mix well. Let it marinate for at least 1 hour, or overnight for better flavor.
- Preheat the grill or grill pan over medium-high heat.
- Thread the marinated beef onto the soaked skewers.
- Grill the skewers for about 2-3 minutes on each side, or until the meat is cooked to your desired doneness.
- In a saucepan, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat.
- Add the ground peanuts and cook for 2-3 minutes, stirring constantly.
- Add the coconut milk, tamarind paste, brown sugar, and lime juice. Stir well to combine.
- Simmer the peanut sauce for about 5 minutes, or until it thickens slightly.
- Serve the grilled sate padang skewers with the peanut sauce on the side.
