Hyderabadi Khichdi
Hyderabadi Khichdi is a traditional Indian dish made with rice and lentils, spiced with turmeric, ginger and garlic.
Ingredients - Serves 4
- Salt - to taste
- Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon
- Ghee - 2 tablespoons
- Green chillies - 2, slit
- Onion - 1, finely chopped
- Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
- Ginger - 1 inch piece, finely chopped
- Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
- Moong dal - 1/2 cup
- Basmati rice - 1 cup
Let's Get Started
- Wash the basmati rice and moong dal together and soak them in water for 30 minutes.
- Heat ghee in a pressure cooker, add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
- Add chopped ginger, garlic, green chillies and onions. Saute until the onions turn golden brown.
- Drain the water from the soaked rice and dal, add them to the cooker.
- Add turmeric powder and salt. Mix well.
- Add 4 cups of water and pressure cook for 3 whistles.
- Let the pressure release naturally. Open the lid and fluff the khichdi with a fork.
- Serve hot with pickle and yogurt.
