Let's Get Started

  1. In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt.
  2. In a separate bowl, dissolve the yeast in the warm water.
  3. Add the yeast mixture to the flour mixture and stir until a dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough on a floured surface for 10 minutes, or until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour.
  6. Punch down the dough and shape into a long, thin loaf.
  7. Place the loaf on a greased baking sheet and let rise for another 30 minutes.
  8. Preheat the oven to 450°F.
  9. Using a sharp knife, make several diagonal slashes across the top of the loaf.
  10. Bake for 25 minutes, or until the loaf is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
  11. Let cool on a wire rack before slicing and serving.
