Custard Bun

Ingredients - Serves 10

Let's Get Started

  1. Warm the milk and dissolve the yeast and 1 tablespoon of sugar in it. Let it sit for 10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the flour, remaining sugar, and salt. Make a well in the center and add the yeast mixture, 1 egg, melted butter, and vanilla extract. Mix to form a dough.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  4. Meanwhile, make the custard filling. In a saucepan, mix the custard powder and sugar. Gradually stir in the milk and cream. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens and comes to a boil. Remove from heat and let cool.
  5. Punch down the dough and divide into 10 equal pieces. Flatten each piece and place a spoonful of custard in the center. Gather the edges and pinch to seal. Place the buns seam-side down on a baking sheet. Cover and let rise for 30 minutes.
  6. Preheat the oven to 375°F. Beat the remaining egg and brush it over the buns.
  7. Bake for 20 minutes, or until golden brown. Let cool on a wire rack.
