Buñuelos
Buñuelos are a traditional Mexican dessert, perfect for any festive occasion. These sweet fritters are light, crispy and soaked in a syrup made from brown sugar, cinnamon, and guava.
Ingredients - Serves 20
- Guava - 1, cut into pieces
- Cinnamon sticks - 2
- Brown sugar - 1 cup
- Vegetable oil - For frying
- Butter - 2 tablespoons, melted
- Milk - 3/4 cup
- Eggs - 2
- Salt - 1/2 teaspoon
- Baking powder - 1 teaspoon
- All-purpose flour - 2 cups
Let's Get Started
- In a large bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt.
- In another bowl, beat the eggs, then add the milk and melted butter.
- Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until a dough forms.
- On a floured surface, knead the dough until smooth.
- Divide the dough into 20 pieces and roll each piece into a ball.
- Heat the oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 375°F.
- Fry the dough balls, a few at a time, until golden brown. Drain on paper towels.
- In a saucepan, combine the brown sugar, cinnamon sticks, and guava with 1 cup of water. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer until the sugar is dissolved.
- Pour the syrup over the buñuelos and let soak for a few minutes before serving.
