Boston Cream Ice Cream
Indulge in the creamy and rich flavors of Boston cream pie in ice cream form. This homemade ice cream features a luscious vanilla custard base, chocolate ganache swirls, and chunks of tender cake.
Ingredients - Serves 8
- Yellow cake - 1 cup, crumbled
- Chocolate ganache - 1/2 cup
- Vanilla extract - 1 teaspoon
- Egg yolks - 4
- Granulated sugar - 3/4 cup
- Heavy cream - 1 cup
- Whole milk - 2 cups
Let's Get Started
- In a saucepan, heat the milk and heavy cream over medium heat until it begins to simmer. Remove from heat.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the sugar and egg yolks until well combined.
- Slowly pour the hot milk mixture into the egg mixture, whisking constantly to prevent curdling.
- Return the mixture to the saucepan and cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until it thickens and coats the back of a spoon. This should take about 10-15 minutes.
- Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract. Let the custard cool completely.
- Once cooled, transfer the custard to an ice cream maker and churn according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- While the ice cream is churning, prepare the chocolate ganache by melting the chocolate in a heatproof bowl set over a pot of simmering water. Stir until smooth and glossy.
- Once the ice cream reaches a soft-serve consistency, layer it in a container with the crumbled yellow cake and drizzle with the chocolate ganache. Repeat the layers until all the ingredients are used.
- Cover the container and freeze the ice cream for at least 4 hours, or until firm.
- Serve the Boston Cream Ice Cream in bowls or cones and enjoy!
