Ingredients - Serves 6
- Water - 4 cups
- Pepper - 1/2 teaspoon
- Salt - 1 teaspoon
- Worcestershire sauce - 2 tablespoons
- Ketchup - 1/4 cup
- Mustard - 2 tablespoons
- Brown sugar - 1/4 cup
- Molasses - 1/2 cup
- Onion - 1 medium, chopped
- Salt pork - 8 ounces, diced
- Navy beans - 1 pound
Let's Get Started
- Rinse the navy beans and remove any debris. Place them in a large pot and cover with water. Bring to a boil, then remove from heat and let soak for 1 hour. Drain.
- In the same pot, add the soaked beans, salt pork, chopped onion, molasses, brown sugar, mustard, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and water. Stir well to combine.
- Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for 3 hours, or until the beans are tender and the sauce has thickened. Stir occasionally.
- Preheat the oven to 325°F (165°C).
- Transfer the bean mixture to a baking dish. Arrange the diced salt pork on top.
- Cover the dish with foil and bake for 1 hour.
- Remove the foil and continue baking for an additional 30 minutes, or until the top is browned and crispy.
- Serve hot as a main dish or as a side with cornbread or biscuits.
