Baozi
Baozi, or steamed buns, are a delicious treat from Chinese cuisine. These buns are soft and fluffy, and are typically filled with a savory or sweet filling.
Ingredients - Serves 10
- White pepper - 1/4 teaspoon
- Sesame oil - 1 teaspoon
- Soy sauce - 1 tablespoon
- Green onions - 2, chopped
- Ground pork - 1/2 cup
- Vegetable oil - 1 tablespoon
- All-purpose flour - 2 cups
- Warm water - 1/2 cup
- Sugar - 1 tablespoon
- Active dry yeast - 1 teaspoon
Let's Get Started
- In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast and sugar in the warm water. Let sit for 10 minutes until frothy.
- In a large bowl, combine the flour and yeast mixture. Add the vegetable oil and mix until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes, until smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let rise for 2 hours.
- While the dough is rising, prepare the filling. In a bowl, combine the ground pork, green onions, soy sauce, sesame oil, and white pepper.
- After the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 10 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball and flatten it with your hand. Place a spoonful of the filling in the center of each piece of dough, then gather the edges of the dough and pinch them together to seal the bun.
- Place the buns on a piece of parchment paper and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
- Steam the buns in a steamer for about 15 minutes, until they are puffed up and cooked through.
