Bansh
Bansh is a traditional steamed dumpling from Assam, India. It is made with rice flour and filled with a savory mixture of vegetables and spices.
Ingredients - Serves 4
- Oil - 1 tablespoon
- Salt - To taste
- Cilantro - 2 tablespoons, chopped
- Green chili - 1, finely chopped
- Ginger - 1 teaspoon, grated
- Onion - 1/4 cup, finely chopped
- Green peas - 1/2 cup
- Carrots - 1/2 cup, grated
- Cabbage - 1 cup, finely chopped
- Water - 1 cup
- Rice flour - 2 cups
Let's Get Started
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the rice flour and water to make a smooth batter.
- In a separate bowl, mix together the chopped cabbage, grated carrots, green peas, chopped onion, grated ginger, chopped green chili, cilantro, and salt.
- Heat oil in a pan and sauté the vegetable mixture for 5 minutes, or until the vegetables are slightly cooked.
- Add the sautéed vegetables to the rice flour batter and mix well.
- Grease a steamer plate or idli molds with oil.
- Pour spoonfuls of the batter into the greased molds, filling them about 3/4th full.
- Steam the bansh for 15-20 minutes, or until cooked through.
- Remove from the steamer and let them cool slightly before serving.
- Serve the bansh hot with your favorite chutney or sauce.
