Bacon Onion Spaetzle
This hearty German dish is a delicious combination of homemade spaetzle, crispy bacon, and caramelized onions.
Ingredients - Serves 4
- Parsley - 2 tablespoons, chopped
- Butter - 2 tablespoons
- Nutmeg - 1/4 teaspoon
- Salt - 1 teaspoon
- All-purpose flour - 2 cups
- Milk - 1 cup
- Eggs - 4
- Onions - 2 large, thinly sliced
- Bacon - 4 slices, chopped
Let's Get Started
- In a large skillet, cook the bacon over medium heat until crispy. Remove the bacon from the skillet and set aside.
- In the same skillet, add the onions and cook until they are caramelized, about 10 minutes.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, flour, salt, and nutmeg until smooth.
- Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Using a spaetzle maker or a colander with large holes, press the batter through the holes into the boiling water.
- Cook the spaetzle until they float to the surface, then remove them with a slotted spoon and drain.
- In the same skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the spaetzle, bacon, and onions and cook until the spaetzle is golden brown.
- Serve the spaetzle garnished with the chopped parsley.
