These Australian meat pies are a classic savory pastry filled with delicious minced beef and gravy.
Ingredients - Serves 6
- Egg - 1, beaten (for egg wash)
- Puff pastry - 2 sheets
- Butter - 2 tablespoons
- All-purpose flour - 2 tablespoons
- Tomato paste - 2 tablespoons
- Worcestershire sauce - 2 tablespoons
- Beef stock - 1 cup
- Frozen peas - 1/2 cup
- Carrot - 1, finely diced
- Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
- Onion - 1, finely chopped
- Ground beef - 1 lb
Let's Get Started
- In a large skillet, cook the ground beef over medium heat until browned. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
- In the same skillet, melt the butter and sauté the onion, garlic, and carrot until softened.
- Add the cooked ground beef back to the skillet and stir in the frozen peas, beef stock, Worcestershire sauce, and tomato paste. Simmer for 10 minutes.
- In a small bowl, mix the flour with a little water to make a paste. Stir the paste into the beef mixture to thicken the gravy. Remove from heat and let cool.
- Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
- Roll out one sheet of puff pastry and line the bottom of a greased pie dish. Trim any excess pastry.
- Pour the cooled beef mixture into the pastry-lined dish.
- Roll out the second sheet of puff pastry and place it on top of the beef mixture. Seal the edges and trim any excess pastry.
- Brush the top of the pie with beaten egg for a golden finish.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the pastry is golden and crispy.
- Allow the pie to cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy!
