Ingredients - Serves 6

Let's Get Started

  1. Rinse the herring fillets under cold water and pat dry with paper towels.
  2. In a saucepan, combine the white vinegar, water, sugar, salt, black peppercorns, and allspice berries. Bring to a boil and stir until the sugar and salt are dissolved. Remove from heat and let the brine cool.
  3. Place the herring fillets in a glass or ceramic dish and pour the cooled brine over them. Make sure the herring is fully submerged in the brine.
  4. Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 24 hours, or up to 3 days for a stronger flavor.
  5. Before serving, drain the herring and discard the brine.
  6. Arrange the herring fillets on a serving platter and garnish with thinly sliced red onion and chopped fresh dill.
  7. Serve chilled and enjoy!
