This traditional Scandinavian dish features pickled herring served with onions and a tangy marinade.
Ingredients - Serves 4
- Rye bread - 4 slices
- Salt - To taste
- Fresh dill - 2 tablespoons, chopped
- Bay leaf - 1
- Whole black peppercorns - 1 teaspoon
- Sugar - 2 tablespoons
- Water - 1/4 cup
- White vinegar - 1/4 cup
- Red onion - 1, thinly sliced
- Pickled herring fillets - 8 fillets
Let's Get Started
- In a small saucepan, combine the white vinegar, water, sugar, peppercorns, bay leaf, and salt. Bring to a boil and stir until the sugar is dissolved. Remove from heat and let the marinade cool.
- Place the pickled herring fillets and sliced red onion in a glass or ceramic dish.
