Sheng Jian Bao
Sheng Jian Bao are a popular street food in Shanghai. These pan-fried buns are crispy on the bottom, with juicy pork and a slightly sweet soup inside.
Ingredients - Serves 4
- Vegetable oil - 2 tablespoons
- Ginger - 1 teaspoon, minced
- Sesame oil - 1 tablespoon
- Soy sauce - 1 tablespoon
- Green onions - 2, finely chopped
- Ground pork - 1/2 pound
- Warm water - 3/4 cup
- Sugar - 1 tablespoon
- Yeast - 1 teaspoon
- All-purpose flour - 2 cups
Let's Get Started
- In a large bowl, combine the flour, yeast, sugar, and warm water. Knead until a smooth dough forms. Cover and let rise for 1 hour.
- In another bowl, combine the ground pork, green onions, soy sauce, sesame oil, and ginger. Mix well.
- Divide the dough into small pieces and roll each piece into a ball. Flatten each ball with a rolling pin to form a circle.
- Place a spoonful of the pork mixture in the center of each circle. Gather the edges of the dough to seal the bun.
- Heat the vegetable oil in a pan over medium heat. Place the buns in the pan, sealed side up. Cook until the bottoms are golden brown.
- Add a small amount of water to the pan and cover. Cook until the water has evaporated and the buns are cooked through.
- Serve the buns hot, with soy sauce for dipping.
