Shanghai Braised Pork
This is a traditional Shanghai-style braised pork belly that melts in the mouth with a sweet and savory flavor.
Ingredients - Serves 4
- Water - 2 cups
- Star anise - 2
- Ginger - 2 slices
- Sugar - 2 tablespoons
- Shaoxing wine - 2 tablespoons
- Light soy sauce - 1 tablespoon
- Dark soy sauce - 2 tablespoons
- Pork belly - 1 pound
Let's Get Started
- Cut the pork belly into 1-inch thick pieces.
- Heat a pot over medium heat, add the sugar and melt it until it turns into a caramel color.
- Add the pork belly pieces to the pot and brown them in the caramelized sugar.
- Add the ginger, dark soy sauce, light soy sauce, Shaoxing wine, star anise, and water to the pot.
- Cover the pot and simmer for about 2 hours, or until the pork is tender and the sauce has thickened.
- Serve the braised pork with steamed rice.
