Rouladen
Rouladen is a traditional German dish made with thinly sliced beef, filled with a savory mixture of onions, mustard, and pickles, then rolled up and braised to perfection.
Ingredients - Serves 4
- Salt and pepper - To taste
- Butter - 2 tablespoons
- Flour - 2 tablespoons
- Red wine - 1/2 cup
- Beef broth - 2 cups
- Bacon - 4 slices
- Dill pickle - 4 spears
- Onion - 1 large, finely chopped
- Mustard - 4 tablespoons
- Beef round steak - 4 slices, thinly pounded
Let's Get Started
- Lay the beef slices flat and spread mustard evenly on each slice.
- Sprinkle chopped onions over the mustard.
- Place a dill pickle spear on top of the onions.
- Roll up each slice tightly and secure with toothpicks.
- Wrap a slice of bacon around each rolled-up beef slice.
- In a large skillet, melt butter over medium heat.
- Add the rouladen and brown on all sides.
- Remove the rouladen from the skillet and set aside.
- In the same skillet, add flour and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly.
- Gradually add beef broth and red wine, stirring to combine.
- Return the rouladen to the skillet and bring the liquid to a boil.
- Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 1.5 to 2 hours, or until the beef is tender.
- Remove the toothpicks from the rouladen before serving.
- Serve the rouladen with the gravy from the skillet.
