Red Sauce
This homemade red sauce is rich, flavorful, and perfect for pasta dishes.
Ingredients - Serves 6
- Fresh basil - 1/4 cup, chopped
- Red pepper flakes - 1/4 teaspoon
- Black pepper - 1/4 teaspoon
- Salt - 1/2 teaspoon
- Sugar - 1 teaspoon
- Dried oregano - 1 teaspoon
- Dried basil - 1 teaspoon
- Tomato paste - 2 tablespoons
- Canned crushed tomatoes - 28 ounces
- Garlic - 3 cloves, minced
- Onion - 1 medium, finely chopped
- Olive oil - 2 tablespoons
Let's Get Started
- Heat the olive oil in a large saucepan over medium heat.
- Add the chopped onion and minced garlic. Cook until the onion is translucent and the garlic is fragrant, about 5 minutes.
- Add the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, dried basil, dried oregano, sugar, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes. Stir to combine.
- Bring the sauce to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low. Cover and let it simmer for 45 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Remove the lid and stir in the fresh chopped basil. Simmer for an additional 5 minutes.
- Taste and adjust the seasoning if needed.
- Serve the red sauce over your favorite pasta or use it as a base for other Italian dishes.
