Prietas
Prietas are a traditional Mexican dish made with corn masa dough and filled with a savory filling.
Ingredients - Serves 6
- Cilantro - 1/4 cup, chopped
- Sour cream - 1/2 cup
- Salsa - 1/2 cup
- Shredded cheese - 1 cup
- Salt and pepper - To taste
- Chili powder - 1 teaspoon
- Cumin - 1 teaspoon
- Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
- Onion - 1 small, finely chopped
- Ground beef - 1/2 pound
- Cooking oil - 2 tablespoons
- Salt - 1 teaspoon
- Water - 1 1/2 cups
- Corn masa flour - 2 cups
Let's Get Started
- In a large bowl, combine the corn masa flour, water, and salt. Mix until a smooth dough forms.
- Divide the dough into 12 equal portions and shape each portion into a ball.
- Heat the cooking oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef, onion, garlic, cumin, chili powder, salt, and pepper. Cook until the beef is browned and the onion is softened.
- Take one portion of the dough and flatten it into a circle. Place a spoonful of the beef mixture and a sprinkle of shredded cheese in the center of the dough circle.
- Fold the dough over the filling to form a half-moon shape. Press the edges together to seal.
- Repeat with the remaining dough and filling.
- Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat. Cook the prietas for about 5 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and cooked through.
- Serve the prietas with salsa, sour cream, and chopped cilantro.
