New York Style Pretzels

Ingredients - Serves 8

Let's Get Started

  1. In a small bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let it sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Pour in the yeast mixture and stir until a dough forms.
  3. Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  5. Preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  6. In a large pot, bring 4 cups of water to a boil. Stir in baking soda.
  7. Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long rope and shape it into a pretzel.
  8. Carefully place the pretzels, one at a time, into the boiling water for 30 seconds. Remove with a slotted spoon and place them on the prepared baking sheet.
  9. Sprinkle the pretzels with coarse salt and bake for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.
  10. Brush the pretzels with melted butter while they are still warm.
  11. Serve the pretzels warm and enjoy!
