Nanaimo Bars
Nanaimo bars are a classic Canadian dessert made with a chocolatey base, creamy custard filling, and a layer of chocolate on top.
Ingredients - Serves 12
- Unsalted butter - 2 tablespoons
- Semi-sweet chocolate - 4 ounces
- Unsalted butter - 1/2 cup, melted
- Powdered sugar - 2 cups
- Milk - 2 cups
- Custard powder - 2 tablespoons
- Butter - 1/2 cup, softened
- Vanilla extract - 1 teaspoon
- Egg - 1, beaten
- Granulated sugar - 1/4 cup
- Cocoa powder - 1/4 cup
- Unsalted butter - 1/2 cup, melted
- Shredded coconut - 1 cup
- Graham cracker crumbs - 1 1/2 cups
Let's Get Started
- In a medium bowl, combine the graham cracker crumbs, shredded coconut, melted butter, cocoa powder, granulated sugar, beaten egg, and vanilla extract. Mix well.
- Press the mixture into the bottom of a greased 9x9-inch baking dish.
- In a separate bowl, cream together the softened butter, custard powder, and powdered sugar until smooth.
- Spread the custard mixture evenly over the chocolatey base.
- In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the semi-sweet chocolate and 2 tablespoons of butter in 30-second intervals, stirring until smooth.
- Pour the melted chocolate over the custard layer and spread it out evenly.
- Refrigerate the Nanaimo bars for at least 2 hours, or until set.
- Once set, cut into squares and serve.
