Let's Get Started

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a rectangular baking pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt for the chocolate layers.
  3. In a separate large bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until well combined.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with the milk. Mix until just combined.
  6. Spread the chocolate batter evenly into the prepared baking pan.
  7. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Let cool completely.
  8. Meanwhile, prepare the vanilla pastry cream. In a saucepan, heat the milk until steaming but not boiling.
  9. In a separate bowl, whisk together the sugar, egg yolks, and cornstarch until well combined.
  10. Slowly pour the hot milk into the egg mixture, whisking constantly.
  11. Return the mixture to the saucepan and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until thickened.
  12. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract. Let cool completely.
  13. Once the chocolate layer and vanilla pastry cream are cooled, spread a thin layer of pastry cream over the chocolate layer.
  14. Place another chocolate layer on top and repeat the process until all layers are used, finishing with a layer of pastry cream on top.
  15. Cover the cake with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or overnight.
  16. Before serving, prepare the chocolate glaze. In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the chocolate and butter together in 30-second intervals, stirring until smooth.
  17. Pour the chocolate glaze over the chilled cake, spreading it evenly with a spatula.
  18. Return the cake to the refrigerator for 30 minutes to allow the glaze to set.
  19. Slice and serve the Mađarica cake chilled. Enjoy!
