Masoor Dal
Masoor dal is a flavorful and nutritious Indian lentil dish made with red lentils, spices, and herbs.
Ingredients - Serves 4
- Ghee or oil - 2 tablespoons
- Lemon juice - 1 tablespoon
- Fresh cilantro - 2 tablespoons, chopped
- Salt - To taste
- Garam masala - 1/2 teaspoon
- Red chili powder - 1/2 teaspoon
- Coriander powder - 1 teaspoon
- Cumin powder - 1 teaspoon
- Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
- Ginger - 1-inch piece, grated
- Garlic - 3 cloves, minced
- Tomato - 1 medium, chopped
- Onion - 1 medium, finely chopped
- Water - 3 cups
- Red lentils (masoor dal) - 1 cup
Let's Get Started
- Rinse the red lentils under cold water until the water runs clear.
- In a large pot, add the rinsed lentils and water. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 15-20 minutes until the lentils are cooked and tender.
- In a separate pan, heat ghee or oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onions and sauté until golden brown.
- Add the minced garlic and grated ginger to the pan and cook for another minute.
- Add the chopped tomatoes and cook until they soften.
- Add the turmeric powder, cumin powder, coriander powder, red chili powder, and salt to the pan. Stir well to combine the spices with the onion-tomato mixture.
- Transfer the cooked lentils to the pan with the spice mixture. Mix well and simmer for 5-10 minutes to allow the flavors to blend together.
- Add garam masala and stir well.
- Garnish with chopped cilantro and drizzle with lemon juice.
- Serve hot with steamed rice or naan bread.
