Marinerede Sild
Marinerede sild, also known as pickled herring, is a traditional Scandinavian dish made with herring fillets marinated in a sweet and tangy vinegar-based sauce.
Ingredients - Serves 4
- Salt - To taste
- Dill - 2 tablespoons, chopped
- Bay leaf - 1
- Black peppercorns - 1 teaspoon
- Red onion - 1, thinly sliced
- Sugar - 1/4 cup
- White vinegar - 1 cup
- Herring fillets - 8
Let's Get Started
- In a small saucepan, combine the white vinegar, sugar, black peppercorns, bay leaf, and salt. Bring to a boil and stir until the sugar is dissolved. Remove from heat and let the marinade cool.
- Rinse the herring fillets under cold water and pat them dry with paper towels.
- In a glass or ceramic dish, layer the herring fillets and sliced red onion.
- Pour the cooled marinade over the herring fillets, making sure they are fully submerged. Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 24 hours, or up to 3 days for a stronger flavor.
- Before serving, sprinkle the marinerede sild with chopped dill. Serve chilled as an appetizer or as part of a traditional Scandinavian smorgasbord.
