Pineapple Bun
A sweet, soft bun commonly found in Asian bakeries, topped with a crunchy, sugary topping that resembles the texture of a pineapple.
Ingredients - Serves 10
- Baking powder - 1/2 teaspoon
- Egg yolk - 1
- Butter - 1/4 cup, softened
- Sugar - 1/4 cup
- For the topping: all-purpose flour - 1/2 cup
- Butter - 2 tablespoons, melted
- Milk - 1/2 cup
- Egg - 1
- Salt - 1/2 teaspoon
- Sugar - 1/4 cup
- Active dry yeast - 1 tablespoon
- All-purpose flour - 2 cups
Let's Get Started
- In a large bowl, combine the flour, yeast, sugar, and salt. Make a well in the center and add the egg, milk, and melted butter. Stir until a dough forms.
- Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes, until smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, until doubled in size.
- While the dough is rising, make the topping. In a bowl, combine the flour, sugar, softened butter, egg yolk, and baking powder. Mix until a dough forms.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Divide the dough into 10 equal pieces and shape each piece into a ball. Divide the topping into 10 equal pieces and flatten each piece into a disc. Place a disc of topping on each bun.
- Bake for about 20 minutes, until the buns are golden brown and the topping is crunchy. Let cool on a wire rack before serving.
