Krempita
Krempita is a delicious Serbian custard pie made with layers of puff pastry and creamy vanilla custard.
Ingredients - Serves 8
- Powdered sugar - For dusting
- All-purpose flour - 1/2 cup
- Egg yolks - 4
- Vanilla extract - 1 teaspoon
- Sugar - 1 cup
- Milk - 4 cups
- Puff pastry sheets - 2 sheets
Let's Get Started
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Line a baking dish with one sheet of puff pastry.
- In a saucepan, heat the milk over medium heat until it starts to steam.
- In a mixing bowl, whisk together the sugar, egg yolks, and flour until well combined.
- Slowly pour the hot milk into the egg mixture, whisking constantly.
- Return the mixture to the saucepan and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until it thickens and comes to a boil.
- Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
- Pour the custard over the puff pastry in the baking dish.
- Cover the custard with the second sheet of puff pastry, pressing down gently to seal the edges.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown.
- Remove from the oven and let it cool completely.
- Dust with powdered sugar before serving.
- Slice into squares and enjoy!
