Kohlrouladen
Kohlrouladen, or stuffed cabbage rolls, is a classic German dish. Cabbage leaves are filled with a savory mixture of ground beef, onion, and rice, then simmered in a rich tomato sauce.
Ingredients - Serves 4
- Beef broth - 1 cup
- Tomato sauce - 2 cups
- Salt and pepper - To taste
- Egg - 1
- Cooked rice - 1 cup
- Onion - 1, finely chopped
- Ground beef - 1 pound
- Green cabbage - 1 large head
Let's Get Started
- Remove the core from the cabbage and carefully peel off the leaves. Blanch the leaves in boiling water for a few minutes until they are soft and pliable. Set aside to cool.
- In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, onion, rice, egg, salt, and pepper. Mix until well combined.
- Place a scoop of the beef mixture onto each cabbage leaf. Fold in the sides and roll up the leaf to encase the meat. Secure with a toothpick if necessary.
- In a large pot, combine the tomato sauce and beef broth. Bring to a simmer over medium heat.
- Add the cabbage rolls to the pot. Cover and simmer for about an hour, until the cabbage is tender and the meat is cooked through.
- Serve the cabbage rolls hot, with the sauce spooned over the top.
