Fritule
Fritule are small Croatian doughnuts flavored with citrus zest and soaked in rum or brandy syrup.
Ingredients - Serves 6
- Powdered sugar - For dusting
- Vegetable oil - For frying
- Lemon zest - 1 tablespoon
- Orange zest - 1 tablespoon
- Rum or brandy - 2 tablespoons
- Milk - 1 cup
- Egg - 1
- Salt - 1/4 teaspoon
- Baking powder - 1 teaspoon
- Sugar - 1/4 cup
- All-purpose flour - 2 cups
Let's Get Started
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
- In a separate bowl, beat the egg and then add the milk, rum or brandy, orange zest, and lemon zest. Mix well.
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Do not overmix.
- Heat vegetable oil in a deep pot or fryer to 350°F (175°C).
- Drop spoonfuls of the batter into the hot oil and fry until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side.
- Remove the fritule from the oil and drain on paper towels.
- While still warm, roll the fritule in powdered sugar until coated.
- Serve warm and enjoy!
