Ensaimada
Ensaimada is a pastry product from Mallorca, Spain. It is a common cuisine eaten in most former Spanish territories in Latin America and the Philippines. The first written references to the Majorcan ensaimada date back to the 17th century.
Ingredients - Serves 12
- Powdered sugar - For dusting
- Salt - 1 teaspoon
- Active dry yeast - 15 grams
- Melted butter - 75 grams
- Eggs - 2
- Sugar - 100 grams
- Water - 50 ml
- All-purpose flour - 500 grams
Let's Get Started
- In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and salt.
- In a separate bowl, dissolve the yeast in the water and then add to the flour mixture.
- Add the eggs to the mixture and knead until a dough forms.
- Cover the dough and let it rise for 1-2 hours, or until it doubles in size.
- Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
- Roll out the dough into a thin sheet and brush it with melted butter.
- Roll the dough into a log and form it into a spiral shape.
- Place the dough on a baking sheet and let it rise again for about 30 minutes.
- Bake the ensaimada for 20 minutes, or until it is golden brown.
- Let the ensaimada cool and then dust it with powdered sugar before serving.
