Denningvleis
Denningvleis is a traditional South African dish with Cape Malay influences. It's a slow-cooked lamb stew, flavored with tamarind, cloves, and bay leaves.
Ingredients - Serves 4
- Water - 2 cups
- Salt and pepper - To taste
- Brown sugar - 1 tablespoon
- Bay leaves - 3
- Cloves - 6
- Garlic - 3 cloves, minced
- Onions - 2, chopped
- Tamarind paste - 2 tablespoons
- Lamb - 1 kg, cubed
Let's Get Started
- In a large pot, brown the lamb in batches and set aside.
- In the same pot, sauté the onions and garlic until soft and fragrant.
- Return the lamb to the pot, add the tamarind paste, cloves, bay leaves, brown sugar, salt, and pepper. Stir well to combine.
- Add the water and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let it simmer for about 2 hours, or until the lamb is tender.
- Adjust the seasoning if necessary, and serve the denningvleis hot with rice or bread.
