Dal Bhat
Dal Bhat is a traditional Nepali dish consisting of lentil soup (dal) and steamed rice (bhat). It is a staple food in Nepal and is often served with various side dishes.
Ingredients - Serves 4
- Lemon wedges - For serving
- Fresh cilantro - For garnish
- Cooked rice - 4 cups
- Salt - To taste
- Red chili powder - 1/4 teaspoon
- Coriander powder - 1/2 teaspoon
- Cumin powder - 1/2 teaspoon
- Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
- Ginger - 1-inch piece, grated
- Garlic - 3 cloves, minced
- Onion - 1, finely chopped
- Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon
- Ghee (clarified butter) - 2 tablespoons
- Water - 4 cups
- Yellow lentils (toor dal) - 1 cup
Let's Get Started
- Rinse the lentils under running water until the water runs clear.
- In a large pot, combine the lentils and water. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for about 20 minutes or until the lentils are cooked and tender.
- In a separate pan, heat the ghee over medium heat. Add the cumin seeds and let them splutter.
- Add the chopped onion, minced garlic, and grated ginger. Sauté until the onions are translucent.
- Add the turmeric powder, cumin powder, coriander powder, red chili powder, and salt. Stir well to combine.
- Transfer the cooked lentils to the pan with the spice mixture. Mix well and simmer for another 10 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together.
- Serve the dal hot with steamed rice. Garnish with fresh cilantro and serve with lemon wedges on the side.
