Croque Monsieur
Croque-Monsieur is a classic French sandwich filled with ham and cheese, then topped with bechamel sauce and more cheese before being toasted to perfection.
Ingredients - Serves 4
- Ham - 8 slices
- Dijon mustard - 2 tablespoons
- White bread - 8 slices
- Gruyere cheese - 1 cup, grated
- Salt and pepper - To taste
- Nutmeg - 1/4 teaspoon
- Milk - 1 cup
- Flour - 2 tablespoons
- Butter - 4 tablespoons
Let's Get Started
- Preheat the oven to 400°F.
- In a small saucepan, melt 2 tablespoons of the butter over medium heat. Add the flour and cook, stirring, for 1 minute.
- Gradually whisk in the milk and cook, whisking constantly, until the sauce is thickened, about 5 minutes. Remove from the heat and stir in the nutmeg, salt, pepper, and 1/2 cup of the cheese.
- Spread one side of each slice of bread with the remaining butter. Spread the other side of 4 slices with the mustard. Top the mustard side with the ham and the remaining cheese, then top with the remaining bread slices, butter side up.
- Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sandwiches and cook until golden on both sides, about 5 minutes per side.
- Transfer the sandwiches to a baking sheet. Spread the tops with the bechamel sauce and sprinkle with the remaining cheese.
- Bake until the cheese is melted and bubbly, about 10 minutes.
