Boston Baked Beans
This traditional Boston Baked Beans recipe is made with molasses, brown sugar, and salt pork.
Ingredients - Serves 8
- Water - 6 cups
- Black pepper - 1/2 teaspoon
- Salt - 1 teaspoon
- Mustard powder - 1 tablespoon
- Brown sugar - 1/2 cup
- Molasses - 1/2 cup
- Onion - 1, diced
- Salt pork - 1/2 pound, diced
- Navy beans - 1 pound, dried
Let's Get Started
- Soak the beans overnight in a large bowl of water.
- Preheat the oven to 300°F.
- In a large dutch oven, cook the salt pork over medium heat until it begins to render its fat.
- Add the onion and cook until it is soft and translucent.
- Drain the beans and add them to the pot along with the molasses, brown sugar, mustard powder, salt, pepper, and water.
- Cover the pot and bake for 4-5 hours, or until the beans are tender and the sauce is thickened.
- Stir the beans occasionally during cooking, adding more water if necessary.
- Serve the beans hot, with a slotted spoon to drain off any excess liquid.
