Bacalhau Com Natas
Bacalhau com Natas, or Cod with Cream, is a popular Portuguese dish made with salted cod, potatoes, onions, and a rich cream sauce.
Ingredients - Serves 4
- Cheese - 100 grams, grated
- Salt and pepper - To taste
- Butter - 2 tablespoons
- Flour - 2 tablespoons
- Milk - 200 ml
- Heavy cream - 200 ml
- Olive oil - 2 tablespoons
- Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
- Onions - 2 large, thinly sliced
- Potatoes - 500 grams, peeled and sliced
- Salted cod - 500 grams, soaked and shredded
Let's Get Started
- Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
- Boil the potatoes until tender, then drain and set aside.
- In a large pan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the onions and garlic and cook until soft.
- Add the shredded cod to the pan and cook for a few minutes until it starts to flake.
- In a separate pan, melt the butter. Stir in the flour to make a roux, then gradually add the milk and cream, stirring constantly until the sauce thickens.
- Add the cod and onions to the cream sauce and stir to combine. Season with salt and pepper.
- Layer the potatoes and cod mixture in a baking dish, finishing with a layer of potatoes on top.
- Sprinkle the grated cheese over the top of the dish.
- Bake for 20-30 minutes, or until the top is golden and bubbly.
