This crispy and flavorful air fryer blooming onion is a healthier version of the classic appetizer. It's perfect for sharing!
Ingredients - Serves 4
- Cooking spray - As needed
- Bread crumbs - 1 cup
- Milk - 1/2 cup
- Egg - 1
- Black pepper - 1/2 teaspoon
- Salt - 1 teaspoon
- Garlic powder - 1 tablespoon
- Paprika - 1 tablespoon
- All-purpose flour - 1 cup
- Large onion - 1
Let's Get Started
- Preheat the air fryer to 400°F (200°C).
- Cut off the top of the onion and peel off the skin. Place the onion cut-side down on a cutting board.
- Make vertical cuts into the onion, starting from the top and stopping about 1/2 inch from the bottom. Repeat around the onion to create petals.
- In a shallow bowl, mix together the flour, paprika, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper.
- In another shallow bowl, whisk together the egg and milk.
- Dip the onion into the flour mixture, making sure to coat all the petals. Shake off any excess flour.
- Next, dip the onion into the egg mixture, again making sure to coat all the petals.
- Finally, coat the onion with bread crumbs, pressing gently to adhere the crumbs to the petals.
- Spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray. Place the coated onion in the basket, cut-side up.
- Air fry for 15-20 minutes, or until the onion is golden brown and crispy.
- Remove from the air fryer and let cool for a few minutes before serving.
- Serve with your favorite dipping sauce and enjoy!
